• Custody --I share the court's focus  on focus on the best interests of the children in custody matters. Like their parents, sons and daughters of divorce are entitled to peace of mind and stability.

  • Visitation and parenting time — Minimizing the impact of a divorce comes in both parents spending quality time with their children. They are entitled to not only a stable environment but also one that is safe.

  • Child relocation — Few divorce-related issues are as emotional as the possible move-away of a child to another state. While their best interests must be determined, the parent left behind has rights that need protection as well.

  • Parental alienation — Sadly, many divorces involve one spouse turning a child against the other parent. Manipulation and disparaging remarks have not only poisoned a young mind but also put a future parental relationship at risk.

  • Support — Strict formulas determine child support amounts and are based on income, overnights and other factors. I will ensure that all appropriate factors are considered. Spousal support is more subjective and based upon immediate and future needs.

  • Multi-state custody/support issues — Cases involving custody in more than one state are complex and require an attorney experienced in custody and support law, regardless of the jurisdiction.

  • Property division — Dividing and protecting assets can turn an uncontested divorce into a war. In Michigan,  marital property is usually divided fairly. However, the process becomes complex and contentious when valuing property, specifically when it involves pensions and IRAs.

  • Enforcement rights and domestic violence issues — A spouse committing domestic violence or unwilling to adhere to a divorce decree must be held accountable. My job is to protect both the rights and the safety of my clients.

  • Post-divorce modifications — Over time, employment and financial situations change; or the best interest of a child changes, requiring us to revisit a divorce decree and modify as needed to better reflect the present.

  • Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements — Taking proactive steps prior to a marriage through a prenup can go a long way in protecting valuable family assets, particularly in second marriages. Postnuptial agreements can help clarify issues in an existing marriage and provide a couple peace of mind.
